Glass Gardens, about ph
I am constantly amazed by the discovery that I, Patti Holmes, can paint.  Although I always had the desire, raising two children and working full time as a fundraiser more than 55 miles from home left little extra time to even try!

Gardening was my first hobby, and as I’d work among the flowers I’d find myself thinking that if I would Glass Gardens, about phjust apply myself, maybe I could teach myself enough so that I could bring the garden indoors. (How wonderful during those dreary months of winter!) And if I could paint my own backsplash I could stop my endless search for those non-existent tiles I wanted!  So I got to work searching for my “inner creativity” instead.

Soon I was painting everything I could get my hands on, and friends and family members were inundated with my “work.”  My son, Craig, got married and I painted 40 centerpieces for him and his bride, Kristin.  After the reception, the guests took them home and put them on display. To this day when I go to their homes,  I want to put them in my bag and spirit them away in the hopes that no one else will ever, ever see them!

But if you love something and are driven to do it—you can’t help but get better.  Plus my good friends and co-workers began requesting specific items for gift-giving:  a platter to match a newly painted kitchen; a tea cup and saucer for a grandmother who loves butterflies, and the list goes on.  In late 2006, with all signs pointing to change (a long story!), I left my office job and career of 25 years and started a new life and second career, as a decorative painter.

Today I spend my days painting gardens on glass and enamel in my home in Sharpsburg, Maryland, where I Glass Gardens, about phlive with my husband, Tim, and two dogs.  I consider myself fortunate to live in an area of such natural beauty.  Inspiration for new designs comes from all that surrounds me; not only in my garden but in the shades of blues and greens of the river in summer; or the reds and golds of the leaves in autumn.  It seems I want to paint everything I see!

Recently I led a painting workshop so I find myself encouraging other artists to paint with me—perhaps lending a different style that will complement mine. With some encouragement, my daughter, Jessica, has discovered her talent and passion for painting.  She’s already begun working on some designs for this year’s Holiday Collection!

When I’m not painting, I can most likely be found in the garden, chasing after one or more of my four (!) grandchildren, or catching up on long overdue visits with my Mom.  I am always surprised at how much there is to do.  And I feel I must report that, no, I have not yet started my backsplash.

P.S.  Oh, about the ‘ph’:  It’s been my signature for so long it has even been a nickname. So when I signed my first piece it just happened naturally.  Seems I can change my life, but the ‘ph’ factor will always stick with me!

Glass Gardens painting for charity

Having spent 25 years in the fundraising business, I have made the acquaintance of so many terrific people who have dedicated their careers to working for organizations that help people in need.  It is my desire to acknowledge them all and in some small way continue to do my part by offering up an item for sale that Glass Gardens painting for charitywill benefit some of my favorite charities.

Since February of this year, 20% of the net proceeds of this champagne flute have been earmarked for organizations that focus on breast cancer research and early detection.  The proceeds will be shared between the Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund at Frederick Memorial Hospital and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  The campaign will continue through October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Other items will soon be added.  Please see “Painting for Charity” for the most current information.
